How do I pick the right gaming monitor?
|Size||20"- 27"||A bigger display provides an enhanced gaming experience by allowing a larger field of view and more detail. The resolution is also important to ensure a screen does not appear pixelated. 24" monitors are currently the standard for gaming, although 27" monitors are growing in popularity due to the increased immersion they provide.|
|Resolution||900p - 1440p||Screen resolution is the measure of the number of pixels a screen can display. The higher the number, the greater the detail of the image. 24" monitors are optimally paired with 1080p in gaming. 27" monitors can be paired with 1080p (HD) or 1440p (WQHD or QHD - 4 times as many pixels as HD). Some gamers prefer the 24"/1080p combination, while others find the 27"/1440p combination the most immersive and impressive.|
|Refresh Rate||60hz-155hz||Refresh rates are defined as how often a monitor displays a new image on the screen per second; usually represented by Hertz (Hz). The higher the refresh rate, the more frames the panel is capable of displaying, resulting in smoother visuals and a more instantaneous display of gameplay changes. While gaming at 60hz is standard, 144hz and above is considered optimal.|
|Response Time||5ms-1ms||A monitor’s response time is the number of milliseconds (ms) for a pixel to change from fully active, to inactive, back to active again. A monitor with a lower response time is capable of showing you actions closer to real time, allowing you to respond to in-game changes more quickly. 5 ms and under is considered optimal for gaming, with 1ms considered the best response time.|
|Adaptive Sync||FreeSync & G-Sync||AMD's FreeSync and NVIDIA's G-Sync are features of certain monitors that synchronize the refresh rate of the monitor with the refresh rate of the graphics card, preventing image stuttering, tearing, and providing exceptionally smooth gameplay. Each system is proprietary - so if you have an AMD card (RX 570, RX 580) you'll want a monitor with FreeSync, and if you have a GTX card (GTX 750ti, GTX 1050ti, GTX 1060, GTX 1070, GTX 1080ti) you'll want a monitor with G-sync to take advantage of this feature.|
|Input Ports||DisplayPort, HDMI, VGA||1920×1080 screen resolution at 60-75hz will generally look the same whether you’ve connected via the DVI-D, DisplayPort, or HDMI port. To take full advantage of 144hz gaming monitors you'll want to use DisplayPort. Additionally, to take advantage of FreeSync or G-Sync features requires the use of DisplayPort as well. VGA is an older, more limited input and should be avoided whenever possible.|
